Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics is a treatment used to correct more complex cases of bad bites or jaw bone abnormalities (you may also hear it called “orthognathic surgery” if you’re hanging around a bunch of dentists). Surgical orthodontics is a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery.  Dr. Kohrs collaborates with some of Colorado’s best oral and maxillofacial surgeons on his surgical cases. Should your treatment require this type of treatment, Dr. Kohrs will work hand-in-hand with a recommended surgeon to ensure the best possible result for your smile.

You may have a few questions about surgical orthodontics. Here are some of the most frequently-asked questions we see!

How will I know if I need surgical orthodontics?

Only a very small percentage of patients require surgical orthodontics.  For most patients, a desire to change their facial appearance is the motivator to explore surgical orthodontics.  Dr. Kohrs will recommend surgical orthodontics only if he feels it is a necessary step in your treatment plan. Each smile is different, but surgical orthodontics is most commonly used in treatment plans where an improper bite cannot be corrected with braces or clear aligners alone or in cases where jaw growth has been significantly affected by issues such as a cleft lip or palate.

How does orthodontic surgery work?

Just like your smile, each case of surgical orthodontics is unique! Dr. Kohrs will review his recommendation with you, and will refer you to a top oral and maxillofacial surgeon so you can understand all aspects of your treatment prior to beginning. Typically, the surgical procedure is completed during your orthodontic treatment, often around the half-way point.  Your surgeon will perform the surgery, and it will typically take place in a hospital or surgical facility. These surgical procedures can take several hours depending on each individual case. Once the surgery is complete, you will typically have a couple of weeks to rest and recover. Since orthognathic surgery is a major treatment, we recommend that you schedule some time away from work and school during the healing process. After your jaw has healed, we’ll see you back in our office (yay!) to complete your treatment!

Are there any risks associated with orthodontic surgery?

As with any major medical surgery, there may be certain risks associated with orthodontic surgery. However, this type of treatment has been performed nationwide for many years, and Dr. Kohrs will ensure you are connected with a great surgeon who is an expert for your case. And as always, we are available for any questions or concerns related to your treatment.
